I thought I would write about the benefits of water birth since I decided to add birth pool rental to my services (YAY! Coming soon. Come back to visit my services page to get all the details). I am excited to offer this hassle-free option to Golden and surrounding areas. While water births don’t always have to happen at home, the reality is our local hospital is limited in terms of hydrotherapy it can offer and there isn’t a birth center in our area. So let’s see why this could be a good option.
Benefits of water birth
Studies surrounding water birth are still limited. Just like any other procedures or choices you make surrounding your birth preferences, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. You might be eligible if you had a low-risk pregnancy and no other counterindications but this is something you would need to discuss with your health care team.
Here are some potential benefits that have been observed during birth where water was used during the first and/or second stage:
- Reduces the pain sensations therefore also reducing the need for medical pain relief and/or the epidural
- Increases satisfaction with the birth experience. The birther may feel more in control, autonomous and has more privacy
- It’s relaxing, reduces stress and anxiety and promotes good flow of oxytocin
- May lead to a shorter labour
- Reduces tearing and episiotomy
Water can be a great tool to relax and manage the pain sensation in earlier labour. I sometimes suggest it to get things going if labour seems to have slowed down. Know that you don’t have to be fully immersed in a birth pool to get some benefits. Pointing your shower head at the low back can help the pain in that area. Taking a bath at home before leaving for the hospital can be a great way to relax and rest.
I suggest you discuss the risks and benefits with your health care provider if you are considering a home water birth. It is important to me that you know your options so that you make informed decisions that align with your values. I believe this a very valid option for the appropriate families and I hope my new birth pool rental services will be helpful for those who wish to experience a home water birth. If you are wondering if this option is for you or you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me!
I consulted articles from Evidence Based Birth, SOGC and ACOG to write this blog post.
